Invest In Your Health Discussion Series – What Is It?
,
Are you ready to trust your body to heal itself?
Then you’re in the right place!
We know how busy everyone is and how much everyone can benefit from attending just a few short well being workshops, so I created the Invest In Your Health Discussion Series. This 3-part series of workshops will provide you with short, sweet and simple ideas, tips and hacks that are guaranteed to help improve even the busiest family’s health one step at a time. Everything you eat and do today affects your future health.
If you’re confused about all the conflicting dietary, nutritional and exercise advice out there, you’re not alone. Every week, it seems as if researchers are learning something new about ways to help us stay mentally sharp, slender and disease-free — as well as foods and lifestyle habits that make us sluggish, overwhelmed and drained. How do you know who or what to believe?
This 3-part discussion series is all about helping busy people like you make sense of all the confusion. The first half hour provides information around a topic, with another half hour of shared discussion. You will explore hundreds of simple ways you can positively impact your health–immediately. All I ask is that you commit to making the choice to truly focus on YOU for a change. I invite you to take time over the next 22 weeks to do just that…invest more time and energy in yourself and trust your body to heal itself. In the end, you will sharpen your awareness so you can more easily listen to what your body is trying so hard to tell you.
What can I expect from a wellness discussion series?
A discussion series can be a space where people gather together simply to discuss a topic of interest. A discussion series can also be a course or a group of classes or workshops that provides participants with small chunks of information, and then offers an equal amount of time to digest and discuss what they’ve just learned. This wellness series is of the second type, which provides participants with a multi-modal, interactive group approach. It is designed to provide a safe space for people to share their concerns, ask questions and receive answers in a safe, non-judgmental environment where we can come together as a community. Sometimes it take a community to create change!
You can expect to learn a lot of very practical alternative ways to help you reduce pain, reverse aging, restore health and redesign the kind of healthy lifestyle you were meant to have. There will be food tastings in some of the workshops and handouts to help you as you begin your new wellness journey. You will also have access to me via email, should you desire extra support during the next 21 weeks.
Who is this wellness discussion series for?
This wellness discussion series is for anyone who is ready to learn the steps needed to create a life-long plan for improving their health. Whether you struggle with your own wellbeing, are concerned about a family member, friend or neighbor, or are a wellness advocate, I invite you to come learn and share with us. I promise you will always walk away with healthy and practical nuggets of information you can use immediately.
Where and when will the Invest In Your Health Discussion Series take place?
Discussion series take place yearly and will be found in the events calendar tab at the top of the website.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Of course! The more the merrier! Even students over the age of 16 who are interested in developing positive healthy habits for life are welcome to join us. The faster you begin to learn the steps needed to take your health goals into your own hands, the fewer problems you’ll encounter as you age and the longer and happier life you will live. We are placing our trust in future generations to care for this earth and its inhabitants. They need to have sharp, clear, healthy minds to care for it sensibly and thoughtfully.
How do I register and pay for the workshops?
Just register and for the workshops of your choice. Most workshops cost only $10. I know, that’s crazy cheap, right? With many workshops, if you invite one friend or family member who is over the age of 16, they can attend for FREE! You will receive a confirmation email with all the details for your guest to attend. Your guest will have to accompany you to the same workshop to participate for free. The best way to create change is to do it with a support person. We hope this makes it easier for you to manage your health goals and stick to them.
What if I have questions about a topic before we begin?
I welcome all questions. In fact, I LOVE topic questions! This helps me ensure that discussions are meaningful and address the needs of the participants who attend. The idea here is to begin conversations that focus on “whole-person” wellness. In order to get the right answers, you have to know what questions to ask doctors and other health advocates. You also have to feel comfortable asking those questions. You are your best wellness advocate—never forget that! If you don’t take charge of your own health first, how can we be of help to others? There is a tremendous power when people gather together to learn from and support one other.
What is the overall purpose for these workshops?
The purpose of this workshops series is not to sell you something, so let me get that out of the way now. The purpose it two-fold:
First, Roanoke is opening so many great doors to help people become physically fit. We have beautiful Roanoke Valley Greenways that are connecting parts of our town together so families can ride bikes, walk, play and get outdoors in the sun. We also have the Appalachian Trail right in our backyard. Roanoke is one of the top rated mountain biking destinations due to Roanoke’s variety of moderate to expert single track trails around Carvin’s Cove. We have some great gyms and rec centers, as well as the healing arts, martial arts and dance classes. Their focus is primarily on an individual’s physical health and wellbeing. But, what about a person’s inner wellbeing?
Secondly, there is constantly new information from studies that have been conducted over the years. That research is now telling us that we need to treat the whole person more than ever before. Treating only the symptoms for pain doesn’t get to the root of the real problem for the pain. There is usually an accumulation of interrelated problems within the body that, over years, finally causes parts of the body to break down or become painful. As Americans continue to eat the Standard American Diet (funny how the acronym spells SAD, and sad it truly is!), which contains lots of processed products filled with chemicals, sugar additives, and genetically modified ingredients, we as a nation are becoming sicker and sicker. That’s great for the doctors and insurance companies, but not so great for us. I decided it was time to put my years of studying health and my educational experience to work.
Creating a healthy, supportive community
When we marry together all the great ways Roanoke is improving physical health while also improving inner health, we create a healthy, happy and active community. We create a safe space for people to gather and discuss alternative ways to get to the root of their health problems. This is when true healing begins. Hippocrates knew many years ago that everything within us is connected; only it has taken this long to people to truly listen to his wisdom. He knew years ago to “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” If you’ve tried everything else with few results, isn’t time to take an alternative approach to whole-person healing?
